Schooling Our Kids on Smart Shopping - Win a Kindle!

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Times are tough: we’ve scaled back on our fun shopping trips, and we’re clipping coupons for everything from cereal to shampoo. But with our kids heading back to school, we can’t avoid hitting the stores for supplies, sneakers, and everything in between.

If our kids are old enough to go to school, then they’re old enough to learn that money doesn’t grow on trees. We want to hear your ideas on how parents can turn back-to-school shopping into a teaching moment.

This week, we’re working with Capital One to get the word out about the talking to kids about budgeting and finances. Capital One and national consumer advocacy group Consumer Action sponsor the Moneywi$e eLearning tool, which includes a section all about talking to kids about money. Plus, check out @TeachingMoney on Twitter to get bite-sized family-focused financial tips.

Here’s how to participate:

Write a post on your blog about how we can teach our children about financial responsibility while shopping for school. Post anytime this weekend - Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23 and include links to:

1) http://bit.ly/AaNvi
2) http://blog.parentbloggers.com

Additional requirements:

Posts must be at least 300 words, and URLs must be linked using anchor text within your post. Be creative! And make sure to disclose (in your own words) that this post was written as part of a Parent Bloggers Network Blog Blast.

Send your blog post link to parentbloggers@gmail.com and we’ll round them up on our blog. Don’t forget a clever or unique post title!

What can you win?

We’ve got a Kindle and a $150 VISA gift card - perfect for back to school shopping - to give away at random to one extremely lucky blogger! Two randomly chosen runners up will each receive a $150 VISA gift card too.

Check out all the posts below!  We’ll announce our randomly drawn winners on Wednesday.
