Books can be a huge help when introducing kiddos to the concept of potty training. And one such book has really captivated the attention and admiration of our reviewers. You might even know the classic — its a little somethin’ called, Once Upon a Potty.
In fact, one blogger calls the “her’s version” her family’s “favorite potty training book.” While another loves the “his version“ so much, she refers to the book as “the gold standard of potty training kid lit.”
A few of our bloggers were well acquainted with the book already. Reading the book again, “was like sitting down with an old friend,” writes one of our reviewers. “I had used Once Upon a Potty five years ago when I trained (daughter) Bella.”
Those who were already familiar with the book written by Alona Frankel were delighted to learn their old favorite has been improved! “The book was even better than the copy we already have. Why? Because it’s a board book. Still not getting it? This book spent quite a lot of the time in the bathroom with (older son) so I liked the idea that with our (younger Son) YS we can wipe down the book if need be,” states this mom.
The author definitely knows her audience. Once Upon a Potty was even designed with little users
in mind. The book, is “the perfect size for a 2-yr-old to hold herself”, points out one parentblogger. Yet the book is “sturdy enough to stand up to a girl who is rough on books!” Another blogger chimes in, “Plus… you don’t have to worry about ripped pages or paper cuts.”
The simple story kept many a discriminating toddler interested. But one mom remarked that the artwork was the biggest draw with her daughter. The “delightful illustrations were just as clear and effective with Juliette. She particularly liked that Prudence had curly hair just like her. My favorite is the image of Prudence bending over backwards to see where the poop comes out of. It’s a question every child has, and seeing that little hole on Prudence’s behind clears it right up,” she says.
And now there’s also an audio CD kids can listen to. “Toddler potty karaoke!” a reviewer quips then adds: “The songs, ‘The Joshua & Prudence Theme’ and ‘The Potty Song’ are kick-y little jazz numbers that come both with lyrics and as instrumental pieces. This is a nice feature if you have a little song bird in your house.”
We did hear one gripe with the CD. A reviewer explains, “The voice that reads the story (Jennifer Morehead) was easy to understand, clear, pleasant and generally easy to listen to. I approved. However, the three sections in which Alona Frankel, the author and illustrator spoke, were hard for me to understand.”
But overall, our little testers found both the his version and the her’s version very appealing.
“Holden responded to the CD with unexpected enthusiasm. He told me that not only does he like it, but he wants to start hearing it all the time,” posts one blogger. One of those appealing aspects? “Cute sound effects.” The reviewer explains, “Sam especially likes the sound of the Joshua’s present being unwrapped and of the toilet flushing. Why am I not surprised?”
Overall? One reviewer claims universal appeal within her ENTIRE family – not just with her toddler. “Everyone in the house loves this book. When the book first arrived, my 6 year-old-read it to me twice from cover to cover. She just loved the story.”
Many a blogger commented their copy of Once Upon a Potty won’t be sitting on the shelves collecting dust. Writes one blogger, “We really liked the combination of CD with the book. We’ll be keeping the boy version for when LittleBrother someday learns to use the potty.”
