The best teacher is frequently someone who has “been there.” In the case of Behavioral Therapist James Lehman, MSW, he knows about oppositional-defiant behavior because he exhibited it as a child and teenager. Now he teaches parents how to create the structure and impart the problem-solving tools necessary to their children to stop argumentative behavior. From the Total Transformation Program website:

We focus primarily on the problem behaviors that prevent a child from getting along with others: developing self-esteem, managing anger, underachievement, school performance, substance abuse, and general social problem solving. We will give you specific tools and techniques to deal with problems such as fighting, arguing with parents, lying, temper tantrums, talking back, destroying property, picking on siblings or classmates, acting sullen and withdrawn, lack of motivation, cigarette smoking, substance abuse, and behavior problems in school and in the community.

Mr. Lehman notes that although these techniques were designed for behaviorally challenging kids, the parenting methods in the program can be applied to all children. Five of our bloggers have been given the opportunity to try out the program on their own households.
