With parents attempting to expose their very young children to diverse cultures and different languages from early on, they are always seeking new and effective instructional tools to assist them, particularly for those parents, like me, who only speak English.
And on some days, that’s even questionable!
One such parent and educator, Heidi Whistlefritz, decided that more tools were needed so she created a set of two Spanish Immersion dvds for the toddler-preschool set. These dvds combine repetition and fun to provide kids with exposure to a new language.
Our parent bloggers have been reviewing the Whistlefritz Beginnner Spanish Immersion DVDs with their kids and here’s what they have to say!
One major issue that parents have had with past Spanish language dvds is the quality. This is NOT the case with Whistlefritz. “I am happy with the quality of the videos and the exposure they are giving my kids to hearing people speaking Spanish. These are Spanish immersion videos (not a teach your child Spanish course) and I think they do their job well.”
Some parents tried to translate at first, but then quickly realized that it’s immersion — no translating allowed! “At first I made the mistake of translating some of the words and sentences, from the DVDs, into English for them both, but quickly realized that I was defeating the whole purpose of a Spanish immersion program… Silly me! It is absolutely amazing what they have picked up simply by watching this fun series!”
The parents were impressed with the variety of techniques used in the videos. “And they use many different techniques from adults and children interacting in Spanish to puppets and toys to songs that are acted out as they’re sung. Multiple strategies: another check.” Added another mom, “The DVDs do a great job of using visual and audio cues to clue you in as to what’s being said. For example, when they’re doing a song like Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes in Spanish, it’s hard to not know what they’re talking about.”
And the kicker? The kids LOVED them. “Furthermore, Bethany enjoys them. She laughs and sings and dances and claps her hands and participates with the children on the program.” Added another, “The two dvds are fun for the children with their usage of songs, jokes, skits, and play; all of which are used in order to teach the children the language naturally.”And well, the parents did too.” “Los Animales continues to be the most popular object in our house and so, while the other one is good, too, I will rave about Los Animales. Maria, the host is endearing and not at all annoying. The show offers everything from cute puppets to funny skits. I have learned more Spanish watching these than I did in my college course. They are just plain fun.”
