It’s a Blast From the Past with Highlights Magazine!
One of the best parts of parenting is being able to engage in activities with your kids that you did as a child. Perhaps it was sharing a favorite movie, beloved book, or memorable song. Regardless of the chosen activity, it’s a wonderful opportunity to share your childhood memories with your kids while creating new memories with them!
For today’s Blog Blast, we’re teaming up with Highlights Magazine (now celebrating 60 years - can you believe it?) and their new publication for ages 2-6, High Five. We want you to talk about things you used to do as children that you are engaging in with your kids now. Be it books, songs, activities, sports, crafts, hobbies, or even Highlights magazine, we’d love to hear your experience with bringing your own kid loves to your kids.
Here’s how to participate:
1) Write a post on your blog about your favorite childhood activities that you’re sharing with your kids - anytime before midnight PST today, March 7.
2) Make sure to link Highlights High Five - http://www.highlights.com/highfive and PBN - http://blog.parentbloggers.com in your post.
3) Email us the link to your post (parentbloggers@gmail.com) and we’ll be rounding them up all day, right here on this post.
We’ll pick five posts at random to receive a free year subscription to either Highlights or High Five. Your choice!
Check out all the posts below about what these parents are sharing with their kids! And read below (and here) to see what our bloggers have said about High Five Magazine!

Our bloggers have spent the last two weeks exploring High Five with their kids. And aside from them reminiscing about their own experiences with Highlights as one mom said “All the things I remember from the original Highlights, but geared perfectly to the younger age set“, the bloggers had nothing but positive things to say about this totally ad-free magazine, aimed at 2-6 year olds.
The bloggers couldn’t say enough about the content, pointing out it’s “simplicity and back-to-the-basics appeal” as well as it’s “interactive nature.”
Of course, the kids (and their parents) had their favorite sections. “The ‘Find the hidden pictures’ page was instantly Chicky’s favorite. I was thrilled because it was more interactive and more of a learning experience than just sitting and listening to the same board book over and over again.” Another mom’s kids liked the following “When I asked EBoy what his favorite part of his new magazines were it was definitely the science experiments included. He also enjoyed the recipes and fun puzzles.”
One little girl could decide where to start:
So when we cracked open the first issue of High Five she wanted to read the stories first. No, wait, she wanted to do the hidden pictures first (she’s soooo good at these). Er, she wanted to make the chocolate-covered pretzels (March issue). In short, she was enticed by the whole package, and not sure where to start.
And one mom couldn’t believe how long it kept her kids occupied:
Each issue contains a simple craft project, and the one we tried was both kid- and parent-friendly–the paper-chain caterpillar. It was truly age-appropriate, required only the simplest of materials (paper, scissors, a glue stick), and allowed for creative license–I mean, just check out the nutty face on our friend up there. This activity kept both children happily occupied for nearly an hour. Then they spent another half-hour playing with their new creations! If that’s not worth the price of a subscription (just under $30 for 12 issues; there is no advertising in the magazine) I don’t know what is.
And like many of our parents, this mom felt it was a fantastic investment. “I can’t say enough about High Five. At just under $30 a year, a subscription to this magazine is definitely on my gift list for the boys. It will make a wonderful Easter present. Anything that gets them this excited about reading is worth every penny.”
