High Five Magazine: Here’s What They’re Saying So Far & Blog Blast Announcement

As a child, I eagerly awaited the arrival of my Highlights magazine, chock full of stories, crafts, and my favorite column, the Hidden Pictures. Highlights has been entertaining children for 60 years now (can you believe it?), and has recently launched a new magazine called High Five, aimed specifically at kids age 2-6.

The magazine, available for just under $30 for a one-year subscription, is similar to Highlights but provides younger children with age appropriate stories and activities.

Curious to know about what’s IN the magazine?

This version, created specifically for preschoolers, is packed with wonderful short stories, math and literacy games, and crafts that you can easily do with regular household items you likely have on hand. Each issue also includes a story in Spanish and English, complete with phonetic pronunciation.

Our bloggers have been reading and enjoying with their preschoolers and had this to say (and read down because we’ve got an awesome blog blast coming up Friday, March 7 where you can enter to win one of five subscriptions to either Highlights or High Five magazine).

Bloggers noted that High Five was just as wonderful as the Highlights they remembered, just with easier stories and activities. “It comes in the mail addressed to him now, but it’s still just as full of fun, excitement, and whimsy as Highlights was for our generation.” Another added “Overall, Highlights has done a truly amazing job of creating a magazine for preschoolers that looks and feels like the classic reading material so many of us grew up with.” As did this mom “These magazines are every bit as fun, colorful, and educational as I remember. And guess what? They still have the hidden picture puzzle!”

The activities get the kids involved actively, not just passively. “High Five is much better as a wake-your-brain-up-while-sitting-still activity than a bedtime story. Alec likes that he and Holden can sit down for some quiet time on the weekend and noodle on a few brainteasers while we’re housebound during Milo’s morning nap.” Added another mom “High Five knows that kids don’t want to just read magazines with their parents. They want to color. They want to play with stickers. They want interactive. Each issue contains interactive games such as “Hidden Pictures” and pull-outs like Valentines in the February issue or a mini-storybook in the March issue. Some stories contain little questions at the end to serve as simple “reading” (listening, story) comprehension. “How-to” pages document fun crafts or activities, like cooking.”

Additionally, the stories are definitely geared to the 2-6 year old set. “Each section of High Five is short (1-5 pages), so you can read a quick story with your child when you only have a moment (or if your kid has a short attention span, like mine), or snuggle into the couch and explore several stories and rhymes together if you have more time.” And the quality is outstanding. “The stories inside are always educational, but not in a boring way. The quality of the writing is outstanding, and it is a nice alternative to reading the same three books over and over and over.”

And who can beat the thrill of getting a magazine in the mail with your kid’s name on it? “Seeing her face light up when I tell her she has mail, and then handing her a magazine filled with fun pictures, stories and crafts, is probably the best part of it. Now she has her own magazine to read, and won’t need to steal my magazines to pretend she has mail.”
