Bob the Builder: On-Site - Roads and Bridges: Here’s What They’re Saying So Far

Bob the Builder is familiar to many preschoolers for his cheery disposition, energetic animated sidekicks, and that fun round head. What will happen to Bob once he brought his show out to the “real world” in On-Site - Roads and Bridges? The response of our first set of reviewers is an enthusiastic admission that Bob the Builder has done something innovative by taking his show into “real life.”

All of our bloggers indicated skepticism that their kids would enjoy this DVD because the pint-sized reviewers included a gal with an earlier Bob fetish who had turned her attention to My Little Pony, “a devout fan [whose] fellow kindergarteners turned him into a Star Wars fanatic”, and a brother and sister team whose mom thought they would be “too young” and “too old,” respectively, to enjoy the movie (But, she notes, “I knew that this would interested my 4 year old fix-it daughter.”)

Bob the Builder On Site: Roads and Bridges rose to the challenge!

Regarding the age issue:

One reviewer asked, “Would the self-proclaimed “big kid” still be interested in what he now deems as a “baby show?” [Our blogger's answer] answer? Oh yeah, baby!”. Another reviewer was surprised that all three of her kids enjoyed Bob in their own way: “After watching Bob and real kids work on bridge designs [my four year old daughter] had me drag out the blocks so we could work on creating our own bridge designs. Even my almost 6 yr old, who considers herself “too old” for Bob, got caught up in the road and bridge building action and my son who is still on the young side for tv viewing (1 yr) toddled over and started making truck noises.”

And the fickle interests of kids:

The My Little Pony and The 12 Dancing Barbie Princesses devotee “stood in front of the TV and narrated for me what each machine was called, what it did, and what was being built. Of course, I wasn’t really paying attention - but she was, and that’s what counts.” And that Star Wars fanatic? Well, let’s take a look at the next key-ingredient for DVD success: versatility.

The Sick and Cranky factor:

Alas, the Star Wars fan was sick. In this family, Bob the Builder On Site: Roads and Bridges turned out to be good medicine. While the child-tester of the house was in agony, he still was able to give two thumbs up to Bob, and continued to watch the DVD after he got over his illness. As the reviewer notes, “It is always a good idea to have at least one movie on hand that won’t anger the upset stomach of a vomiting kid.”

Another blogger mentioned that universal period of what-do-I-do-with-my-crabby-kid? time: The footage of the huge diggers, graders and mixers working together to build roads and big bridges held [my daughter] in thrall during that ever-so-crucial time in our household that we call “The Witching Hour.” Between dinner and bathtime, this entertaining and educational show kept her rapt - which gave me the chance to clean up the dinner dishes uninterrupted. Hear that? Bob the Builder can help achieve clean dishes!

More Kudos:

* If your child already likes Bob The Builder, this DVD is a must-have. And for those who may be just mild fans, you might want to check it out. The novelty of watching real-life, huge machines digging in dirt is just too cool to resist.

* Little boys who love their vehicles will love, love, LOVE this video. Methinks even girly-girls will enjoy watching. As a parent, I found it delightfully entertaining and soothing.

* The DVD couldn’t have come at a better time as the county recently started a large road expansion project near my home. Now my kids have a better understanding of what’s happening and [my daughter] has wanted to stop and ask if Bob works there too. This gets a thumbs up and comes highly recommended for all the boys and girls in your life who are facinated with big machines and construction projects.

And one concern:

* “The only thing I wasn’t completely thrilled with was the amount of repetition incorporated throughout. While some repetition of the building method is nice and aides in learning, I found myself thinking, “Ok already! I get it!” (But [my son] didn’t seem to notice, so what do I know?)”
