The Sky Isn’t Visible from Here - Campaign Launch

If you met Felicia Sullivan in real life, you’d leave thinking about her stylish clothes, articulate voice, and general zest for life. You probably wouldn’t be surprised that she was a published author, and two-time Pushcart Prize nominee. But I bet you’d never ever guess that she lived a life of abuse and abandonment at the hands of her own mother, only to find herself succumbing to alcohol and drug abuse later in her own life.

In her first book, a memoir entitled “The Sky Isn’t Visible From Here,” Felicia Sullivan tells her own poignant tale of her childhood on the rough streets of Brooklyn as her mother’s keeper. She shares with us the resiliency of the human spirit, and begs us to ask ourselves “Can parents ever do more harm than good?”

Here’s what people are saying already:

“The story is a Brooklyn Cinderella’s; the endearing new voice is fresh. Funny, fierce, wobbling like a colt on new legs, Sullivan leaps from these pages as a fighter.”
Lisa Dierbeck, author of One Pill Makes You Smaller

“Felicia Sullivan’s memoir is a brave and lovely one. It’s full of terrifying moments in the mean streets of Brooklyn as well as courageous ones in the complicated byways of familial love. Sullivan has created a world that’s beautifully crafted and powerfully inhabited. Brava.”
Roxana Robinson, author of Sweetwater and A Perfect Stranger

  1. I love a good Cinderella story and this book sounds very interesting to me. I hope I win it, but if not, it is definitely on the “to buy” list I keep.

  2. [...] another book giveaway, The Parent Bloggers Network is offering a copy of Felicia Sullivan’s memoir. Just comment and you could win the fabulous book The Sky Isn’t Visible from Here: Scenes [...]

  3. It sounds inspirational. And I could use a little inspiration right now.

  4. I think this book sounds really fascinating. Growing up in a small town in MN with really great parents, it’s worlds away from what I lived, and that’s always interesting to me. Plus, being a parent, I wonder where the line is. If I say a bad word in front of my daughter once in a while or feed her too many happy meals, will that shape her life dramatically? Clearly the dramatic, like this book seems to outline, will shape a life…but into what?

  5. I’ve emailed with Felicia a few times when she’s offered books for review so I was interested in what her memoir was about, considering she’s younger than me I wondered what she could possibly be writing about. After reading SM’s review, I have more clarity on why she could write her memoir so young. Wow. Sounds like she’s a great writer.

  6. I just wanted to publicly mention that I loved this book so much that it’s killing me to wait until next week to review it.

  7. I would love to read this book because I was a Child Welfare Social Worker for 5 years prior to moving to Mass and becoming a stay-at-home mom. It’s definitely a field I will return to. I think that it’s so important to get the perspective of the adult survivor, since it’s often so hard for kids to articulate and/or move past the loyalties they feel to their parents in order to simply tell their story.

  8. [...] you to the Parent Bloggers Network for allowing me to read and review The Sky Isn’t Visible from [...]

  9. I have “The Sky Isn’t Visible From Here” added to my amazon wishlst. But if I win it here, all the better!

  11. I’d love to win this book. Sounds fabulous!

  12. As the daughter and granddaughter of alcoholics, I would love to read this book. Slouching Mom’s review has me chomping at the bit for more!

  13. I’d love to win this book, it sounds like it will be a tough one to read (emotionally). MamaTulip is one of my favourite bloggers and she reviewed it and seemed to really enjoy it, we’ve enjoyed some of the same books so this leads me to believe I might enjoy it too! Also, I need a good book to pick for my book club!

  14. Fabulous review for what sounds like a great book. This is definitely something I want to read, if for no other reason than to experience her strength.
