The Daring Book for Girls: What They’re Saying So Far
It seemed as though the instant that The Dangerous Book for Boys came out, people were already talking about a girl version. And so, authors Andrea Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz, two powerhouses in the literary mom world, took the challenge with The Daring Book for Girls.
And according to our bloggers so far, they did not disappoint. And it’s not just because the book is a pretty blue, glittery, and very big. “The book was gorgeous and textbook large! What a shocker. I was expecting a small book, not a large, beautiful book that would make a great gift for a girl.” Another added “The old fashioned look with a touch of glitter pretty much sums up it up. ”
Who said you can’t judge a book by its appearance?
The bloggers gushed about the content, specifically that it offered a wide variety of topics, none of which included the typical girly girl stuff that one might assume would be included — or as one blogger put it “And none of it involves skanky dolls or sitting slack-jawed in front a computer screen.” Another added “The book by Andrea Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz, covers pretty much every topic I could ever think of possibly needing or wanting to know more about. How’s that for comprehensive?”
Another common theme was how the book sparked numerous memories. “As a once-upon-a-time girl myself, I wallowed in nostalgia as I flipped through the pages. Chinese jump rope, friendship bracelets, cootie-catchers (we called them fortune-tellers), slumber party games, even Greek and Latin roots (by far the most useful thing I learned in 9th grade) — they’re all here, and I know I’ll have fun sharing them with my daughter as she gets older.”
And a few bloggers made sure to point out it would be great for boys as well (and not just to bop them on the head). “Honestly, this book would also be useful for boys! Everyone, regardless of gender, should know how to build a fort or change a tire. Which reminds me that need to re-read that tire chapter.”
Bloggers made sure to point out the high quality illustrations of the book as well — certainly added to the appeal. “In addition to enjoying the content, I was also impressed by the paper quality and the illustrations.”
Some favorite sections included the following:
- The essential gear list alone is something that should be required reading.
One blogger admitted to not have read much of it, mainly because her daughter won’t put it down.
So why haven’t I read more of this book? My daughter hates it when I read over her shoulder. She’s given me plenty of things we need to try or learn more about. So overall, I think this sequel has lived up to the expectation.
Another mom had a similar experience. “My daughter holds this book tight to her chest and wants to take it with her wherever she goes. She’s taken it to pre-school on occasion, to read at rest time, and the teachers loved it! ”
Any complaints? Perhaps fewer pages dedicated to Robert’s Rules. Although some bloggers (yes, more than one!)loved that section of the book!
One chapter that blew me away - because I think it is an important lesson for everyone regardless of career path - is “Robert’s Rules”. This chapter describes in The Basic Rules of Parliamentary Procedure. Sounds boring? Oh no, it’s not boring, it’s essential for anyone who wants to be a productive member of an organization, manage or run an organized group. This chapter is a fantastic foundation for any girl who wants to be a project manager or run their own business.
And boys. A bit more on boys, apparently. One blogger was curious as to why such an uproar about the Dangerous Boys, but not so much about Daring Girls. “There is however a little voice in the back of my head asking why was there so much uproar when the Dangerous Book for Boys was introduced, yet when a similar book for girls comes out, no one has anything to say about it, other than great job?”
But it’s clear that this book provides something for everyone.
Our dad summed it up well.

Can anyone address one of the sections in this book? This is one of the reviews off of Amazon:
—sections on palm reading, Bloody Mary(encouraging girls to contact the dead), and light as a feather stiff as a board (”pretending” that the person is dead, and making up how the person died while chanting, and pretending to levitate them.)—
Regardless of your opinion, I want to make an “informed” decision about the book before I purchase it as a gift.
Thank you so much for your help!

[...] Our first group of bloggers gushed about the book and our next group felt the same way. Of course, the bloggers loved the blue glittery cover (who wouldn’t?) or as one blogger described “a textbook-style, old-school hardback with fancy inside cover designs, silver-sparkle lettering and the sort of heft that makes me swoon.” [...]
