I once heard my older daughter call my younger daughter a name - a word that we don’t use at home (but that’s not to say that our language is completely clean). And I knew exactly where she’d learned it and from whom.
I also once heard my older daughter refer to the “author” and the “illustrator” of a book. I knew where she’d learned that too.
School - whether it’s pre-school, public school, private school, home school, or privately taught classes - is a great source of information. Some of it is expected (reading, writing, and arithmetic, among other disciplines), some of it is unexpected but quite welcome (concepts that are taught - and understood - earlier than anticipated), and some of it has to be “unlearned” at home (choice words, phrases, and songs - usually imparted at recess or on the school bus).
Some of it is reinforced via homework or field trips or rote memorization (multiplication tables, anyone?). Some of it is quickly forgotten (who invented the cotton gin anyway?). And some of it is trotted out at the most inconvenient times - usually in front of grandparents.
Scholastic.com Parents website is an educational resource no matter how old - or young - your kids may be. And the folks behind the website want to know:
What are your kids learning in school?
Write a post and tell us! What academic knowledge has surprised you? What do you think they should be learning but aren’t yet? Tell us about teachers’ approaches that you especially like or don’t like. Do they have homework yet? Are they getting too much or too little, and do you see it a learning tool or mere busywork?
1) Send us the link to your post by midnight PST today, October 12. We’ll be listing the posts by title on our blog, so be creative!
2) Make sure you link the Scholastic.com Parents site (http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/parentsHome.jsp) as well as Parent Bloggers (http://blog.parentbloggers.com) somewhere in your post body.
*We suggest hotlinking the question “What are your kids learning in school?” to the Scholastic.com Parents site somewhere in your post.*
3) We’ll round-up all the posts right here and one winner will be picked at random to receive a $100 Scholastic.com store shopping spree.
In addition, everyone is welcome to use this special coupon code at the Scholastic.com store - BLOGBLAST - which gives you 10% off with purchase of $25 or more, valid 10/12 - 10/21. Please feel free to include it in your post too!
