Our parent bloggers are no strangers to resources encouraging bilingualism in their children. Even if they didn’t review the Boca Beth series or the book written by the two linguistics professors, The Bilingual Edge, it’s a good bet that they’ve watched at least one episode of Dora the Explorer. But as we’ve discussed before, how do you sort out the effective resources from those that are merely entertaining?
The latest offering to be reviewed by our parent bloggers is the DVD series “Kids Love Spanish.” Created by two sisters who are fluently bilingual themselves, Krisse Brock Kelly has a master’s degree in Bilingual Education and has taught bilingual education at the elementary school level, and Julie Brock Campbell worked in the broadcasting industry where she used her Spanish language skills extensively. Both women have also studied abroad and have taught their own children Spanish.
As we discovered through the review campaign for The Bilingual Edge, it’s essential that efforts to teach children a second language include actual human interaction in that language. Therefore, this award-winning DVD series is intended for use by parents and children together. It’s a great way to help parents learn the same introductory vocabulary and phrases so that they can speak to their children in Spanish, even if they themselves aren’t bilingual.
