My husband took to first time fatherhood with extraordinary eagerness and he's gotten pretty good at it too. But the one thing he never counted on was a teething baby. He assumed, somewhat naively, that the little one was only going to chew his expensive and varied teething rings and leave everything else alone. One day he was nuzzling the baby while making goofy faces at him, trying to make him laugh. But the little one had something else on his mind, namely his father's nose which he got his toothless gums on and chewed enthusiastically when his poor unsuspecting dad got a little too close. To date my darling hubby freaks out whenever my son opens his mouth wide while daddy's holding him.

My husband, bless him, was afraid to be alone with Dawson in the first few weeks after he was born. He never spend time around kids so he was learning the ropes and trying his best with diaper changing. I got out of the shower one morning and saw that he had our baby wrapped in a towel and a plastic bag over his legs and the towel, because I didn't have enough diapers on the changing table and he didn't know the extras were in the closet. At least he tried!

While my wife was still in hospital recovering from her c-section, they moved her to a different room. They sent three nursing students to move the bed (with my wife still in it, holding our less-than-24-hour-old baby girl). They were so inept at moving it that they bashed into BOTH sides of the doorway trying to get it in! I calmly, in a very deep voice, told them all to step away. They insisted they could do it, and I repeated, "Step away." I then proceeded to lift the foot of the bed and move it into the room wheelbarrow style. That was the first "protective father" moment I had.

Parenting came ...almost naturally to him. But he did learn a lesson early on with our first child....never pick a baby up and play airplane right above immediately after they are done eating....especially when you are making the noises with your mouth open. Ewww. Yep, he got our son's lunch down his face. Gross!

My hubby was a scared first time daddy, and hardly knew how to breathe when our son was born. And then it was like watching someone come alive... he grew into fatherhood and into adulthood wonderfully in those first few months. And then, with each successive child, he grew more. With our third, he was confident enough to take over ALL household duties while I recovered from my 3rd c-section/hernia repair/tubal surgeries. Dishes, laundry, cooking 3 meals a day - he did it all with an amazing amount of competance! It almost makes me want to have another baby just to see how much further he can grow...

I said *almost* ;)

No dropping baby here with my husband. He picked up on parenting right away. I had a c-section and while in the hospital, he completely took over. He changed every diaper, put her to sleep, etc. - come to think of it, all I really did was feed her! lol
